'Kenilworth Designer Dunny'

The architecturally designed amenities have created a unique entry statement to the hinterland town of Kenilworth and generated wide-spread interest. The amenities can be accessed via an accessible ramp that also serves as a platform to view the surrounding landscape and vistas.

The winning design from the ‘Kenilworth Designer Dunny’ competition (back in 2015) was chosen from almost 200 entries received from national and international entrants. The concept, entitled ‘Canistrum’, was designed by Maleny architectural illustrator and animator Michael Lennie. The intent; bringing ancient craft into the future public domain, Canistrum is an unfinished basket reflecting an unfinished history.

The site posed some interesting design challenges, with the structure needing to be designed to sit above the existing ground level to avoid the building being affected by seasonal flooding from the Mary River. The facilities were completed in February 2020.
