Sunshine Coast Centres Revitalisation Program – Centres Assessments
Sunshine Coast Council is assessing public spaces within the main street areas of our villages and townships. The results will help to inform future place planning and potential placemaking initiatives.
Overview
Activity centres are focussed on our main streets and surrounding spaces within our urban areas.
The Centres Revitalisation Program aims to improve the main street areas of our villages and townships.
These street areas and adjoining public spaces are well used by our community and local businesses. This includes public spaces like streets, plazas, forecourts, and park spaces.
We want to further understand what is working well and what can be improved in these valued public spaces.
It is important to understand how these spaces can continue to support our community and local businesses now and into the future. This will inform future place planning and potential placemaking initiatives.
Project scope
We are assessing centres across the Sunshine Coast on a variety of place elements. These include:
- accessibility and connectedness
- activities and things to do
- environmental sustainability
- inclusiveness
- quality design
- sense of place
- unique attributes.
The Placemaking team is using a range of methods to assess the centres. This includes in-place observation, data collection and range of technical data inputs.
Short surveys targeting residents and businesses are also informing the assessment. An external contractor has conducted the surveys on behalf of Council, asking participants about their experience of Sunshine Coast’s great local places.
Result of the assessment will inform future place planning and potential placemaking initiatives across the region.
Background
The Place Revitalisation Program aims to deliver planning, infrastructure, and activation projects within activity centres.
To inform the development of the program, we need a current assessment of the region’s activity centres.
Council funds this Centres Assessments project through its 10-Year Capital Works Program.
