The Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary is part of First Nations cultural heritage stretching back over 60,000 years. It is a wild place on the banks of the Maroochy River on the outer fringe of Bli Bli.
The 900 metre (one way) elevated boardwalk gently winds to the Maroochy River. It is an easy stroll, perfect for families with prams or those in a wheelchair.
The boardwalk provides the perfect vantage point to observe the distinctive wetland vegetation and the diverse wildlife from waterbirds to crabs that call the wetlands home.

The best time to visit the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary is during day light hours in the cooler winter months, when there are less mosquitos.

Looking for a peaceful walk that’s free of steps and hills? Enjoy a relaxing stroll along the 900m elevated boardwalk through the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary. Stop and listen to the stories and nature sounds featured on our new audio trail signs. Pause and soak up the fresh air at one of the seats located along the boardwalk. The sanctuary is a hidden gem that is great for the heart and soul of people will all abilities.
Life in the wetland
Life thrives here in some of the most extreme conditions on land inundated by seasonal freshwater floods and salty tides. In the 900m walk, you can see a dynamic and diverse array of wildlife with over 200 species of birds, as well as crabs, butterflies, reptiles, fish and other wildlife species. These species live within the distinctive vegetation communities found in the sanctuary:
- wet eucalypt forest
- melaleuca forest
- casuarina woodland
- mangroves
- salt marsh.
Volunteer opportunities
Maroochy wetlands sanctuary is supported by a team of passionate volunteers. They work alongside council staff to provide a welcoming and informative experience for visitors, as well as assisting in the development and maintenance of the wetlands.
Typical duties include:
- visitor Information: welcoming and guiding visitors through the information centre, as well as along the boardwalk
- visitor guide: providing guided educational tours to enhance visitor and student experiences
- scientific research: on-ground learning and research to understand the significant biodiversity values of the wetlands, including participation in our ClimateWatch trail
- community education: assist with development of community education and engagement programs.

Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Support Group
The Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Support Group are passionate advocates for the Wetlands, and support Sunshine Coast Council in the management of the Wetlands. Their aim is ‘To Preserve and Protect the Ecological Viability, and also the Local History of the Wetlands’.
The group meets regularly to hear from guest speakers and attend themed walks in the Wetlands, and includes a Bird Observers group. Membership is free: register to join.
