National tree day 2022
National tree day was celebrated with 6 tree planting events across the Sunshine Coast.
National tree day was celebrated across the coast this year with 6 free, family friendly tree planting events. Across the 6 events over 320 volunteers planted 3880 native trees, shrubs and groundcovers.
Events were held at Nambour, Meridan Plains, Warana, Maleny, Marcoola and Verrierdale. The main event on July 31 was an opportunity for our community to lend a hand to further restore the Doonan Creek environment reserve, spend a day outdoors and connect with nature.
The reserve is a special place and an important coastal habitat area with vegetation that ranges from iconic coastal heath, scribbly gum forest to melaleuca wetlands.
It’s home to more than 125 different bird and 24 different mammal species and vulnerable wallum frogs.
Our community have helped council restore the reserve for many years, and in the last 3 years alone, including Sunday, have planted more than 13200 native trees, shrubs and ground covers.
If you would like to get involved in future tree planting events or bushcare activities, visit our website for more information, www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/bushcare.
Sunshine Coast Council's BushCare Sunshine Coast hosted these events in partnership with Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group, Ecollaboration, Currimundi Catchment Care Group and Coolum & North Shore Coast Care. These were a part of the national tree day initiative organised by Planet Ark in partnership with major sponsor Toyota Australia and its dealer network.
