Coastal Pathway Linear Open Space Master Plan

The Sunshine Coast has a spectacular coastline that is hugely enjoyed by our residents and visitors. The coastal pathway linear open space master plan (PDF, 10145KB) will guide council in expanding on existing pathways to improve access to these iconic views, beaches and park.

Purpose

The vision for the coastal pathway is:

A world-class scenic coastal pathway, connecting communities, and enriching and diversifying the recreational experience of the Sunshine Coast.

An iconic coastal pathway integrating beaches, coastal lookouts, parks, local destinations, services and business for the length of the Sunshine Coast.

The coastal pathway master plan will:

• direct the completion of the 73km long coastal pathway route from Bells Creek in the south to Coolum in the north
• guide the coastal pathway design standards to provide a safe and enjoyable multi-use pathway
• provide direction on accessibility guidelines, material selections and environmental considerations
• outline a delivery program for the next 10 years prioritising stages based on user needs.

The coastal pathway is one of many recreational infrastructure projects delivered by council to help the Sunshine Coast community achieve a healthy, active and sustainable lifestyle. It also helps people connect to local destinations, services and businesses.

Community engagement

Between 21 November to 23 December 2016, council undertook a community consultation process for the draft coastal pathway master plan. The submission period was subsequently extended to 28 February 2017 at the request of members of the community.

Over 2000 submissions were received from the community. The coastal pathway linear open space master plan community consultation summary report (PDF, 8900KB) has been prepared outlining the consultation process and provides a summary of the key findings.

Where to from here

The coastal pathway master plan (PDF, 10145KB) directs the prioritisation of new pathways and upgrades to existing pathways. The criteria applied in the master plan for determining priorities includes: safety, high use areas, connectivity, and coordination with adjoining projects.

• Minyama to Mooloolaba including Mayes Canal Bridge
• Tay & Maloja Avenue, Caloundra
• Cooroora Street to Dicky Beach
• Caloundra Headland Boardwalk
• Bokarina to Buddina Coastal pathway.

Recommended priority project areas include:

• Alex Bluff Foreshore (design complete)
• Cooroora Street, Dicky Beach
• Caloundra Headland Stage 2
• Jensen Park Golden Beach (design complete)
• Coolum to Point Arkwright
• Point Arkwright to Yaroomba
• Maroochydore (Duporth Avenue).

Further community consultation will be undertaken at detailed design stage for each new section of coastal pathway.
