A delegation is the process of assigning responsibility for exercising a power or function usually assigned in legislation to a local government or Chief Executive Officer. These powers or functions are decision-making or administrative in nature.

Under the Local Government Act 2009, the Chief Executive Officer must establish a register of delegations recording all delegations. This register must be available for inspection by the public and must contain the name or title of the person or committee to whom powers are delegated and a description of the powers being delegated.

Sunshine Coast Council reviews and adopts delegations to the Chief Executive Officer on an annual basis. The Chief Executive Officer may then on-delegate powers to other qualified persons to act on their behalf on specified matters. At Sunshine Coast Council delegated powers are assigned to a position, not a person. Officers acting in a position assume all the delegated authority associated with the position they are acting in.
