Storms and cyclones

Storms usually occur from November to March and east coast low pressure systems from January to June. Cyclones can occur from December to April.

Storm over sea.

The wet season usually starts on the Sunshine Coast with thunderstorms in November. Cyclones can occur from December to April.

Unlike North Queensland, the risk of a category 4 or 5 cyclone is rated as very low. Winter storms are usually associated with fast moving east coast lows.

Rain on the Sunshine Coast is usually confined to the wet season. However, flooding on the Sunshine Coast can occur any time of year.  Inland flooding of the Coast’s waterways, creeks, rivers and low-lying plains is a regular occurrence when we get extremely heavy rainfall.
