Read about some of the early results from the Sunshine Coast's Marine BioBlitz.

The Marine BioBlitz was an exciting and educational event that celebrated the marine biodiversity of the declared Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and adjacent waters. Taking place over two days, this event showcased community-driven conservation, scientific exploration, arts and culture for marine enthusiasts of all ages.

Citizen scientist worked with experts to collect important biodiversity data of local marine species. A diverse schedule of expeditions and activities catered for all ages, abilities and interests - from seasoned marine biologists or lovers of the ocean.

Our Sunshine Coast Biosphere is about celebrating people and nature and we all have a part to play in our Biosphere. The ‘Blue Biosphere’, also known as the marine and coastal environments of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve extends 5km offshore and is home to an array of diverse marine life. The Sunshine Coast Marine BioBlitz was a great opportunity to celebrate our coastal and marine environments and role as citizen scientists within our Biosphere community. While thinking globally and acting locally, we can celebrate and share our learnings as part of a world network of biosphere reserves.

Event details

Date: 30 – 31 August, 2024

Location: Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and adjacent waters – From Pumicestone Passage to Coolum Beach and adjacent coastal waters.

The bioblitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all living species within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and adjacent waters. Record animal and plant species you find above and below the water from inter-tidal zones, rock pools, estuaries, open ocean and reef.

You can view the program here.
