Large household item disposal
Private operators and community groups offer alternate services for disposing of or recycling and selling unwanted items.
Council runs many waste management facilities (including rubbish tips and second hand shops) throughout the Sunshine Coast. These are used for disposing waste and collecting and selling recyclable items. Recycling separate loads is free or cheaper than disposal. Find out how to get the most out of council's waste management facilities.
Bulky item collection services
There are four main categories of service providers offering bulky item collection services in the Sunshine Coast area:
- charitable organisations
- waste removal companies
- skip bin companies
- garden waste companies.
All the above advertise their respective services in the Yellow Pages, local newspapers, Internet, Local Search etc.
Large household item waste collection directory
Council has also established a large household item waste collection directory with the intent of helping residents find local suppliers offering waste collection services for unwanted items that are difficult to move.
Add your waste collection related business to the directory now for free. Your listing will appear once it has been approved.
Please note the directory is restricted to Sunshine Coast businesses.
Garage Sale Trail
Council proudly supports the Garage Sale Trail program which promotes positive community connections. It provides a novel way for residents to reduce waste and make money.
Garage Sale Trail generates local economic activity and provides residents with a fun day of buying, selling and connecting with local people. However, the organisation’s main aim is to reduce waste and reuse items which otherwise might end up in landfill.
For more information and a list of sale locations in the local area, go to the Garage Sale Trail website.
Charitable organisations
Most charitable organisations provide a free collection service for household goods if the item to be collected is reusable and able to be sold at their community stores/opportunity shops.
The collection service is available to all sectors of the community.
Sunshine Coast charitable organisations that provide free collection service include:
- Aid for the Blind
- Lifeline
- Endeavour Foundation
- Bloomhill
- Gateway Care
- Neighbours Aid Community Stores
- Salvation Army
- St Vincent De Paul
Most charitable organisations have multiple branches across the region and are able to provide a collection service within days of initial contact.
Many items are free to recycle at the Resource and Recovery Facilities. For example, the following are free to drop off:
- clothing and clean rags
- engine oil (domestic quantities)
- any metal objects such as roofing iron, car exhausts and white goods
- paint and hazardous chemicals (domestic quantities)
- all items that are accepted in the yellow lidded recycling bin
- items that can be sold via recycle markets such as furniture, toys and building materials. These items must be in saleable condition
- fridges and freezers.
Waste removal companies
Waste removal companies are listed in the Sunshine Coast Yellow Page directory. Waste removal companies charge an hourly rate for collection services. They charge an additional disposal fee if the item is not reusable/recyclable or is subject to gate fee at the disposal facility. Most waste removal companies are able to offer a next day collection service.
Skip bin companies
Skip bin companies listed in the Sunshine Coast area mostly offer a next day delivery/collection service. Skip bin companies charge based on the cubic metre capacity of the skip bin (including disposal cost).
Garden waste companies
Numerous garden waste companies are listed in the Sunshine Coast area, many with multiple branches. Most garden waste companies will collect large garden waste items, however generally need to view the type and volume of material prior to offering a quote for collection and disposal. Most garden waste companies are able to offer a collection service within days of providing a quote.
