Sunshine Coast Marine BioBlitz
The first Sunshine Coast Marine BioBlitz took place on 30 – 31 August, 2024.
Read about some of the early results from the Sunshine Coast's Marine BioBlitz.
The Marine BioBlitz was an exciting and educational event that celebrated the marine biodiversity of the declared Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and adjacent waters. Taking place over two days, this event showcased community-driven conservation, scientific exploration, arts and culture for marine enthusiasts of all ages.
Citizen scientist worked with experts to collect important biodiversity data of local marine species. A diverse schedule of expeditions and activities catered for all ages, abilities and interests - from seasoned marine biologists or lovers of the ocean.
Our Sunshine Coast Biosphere is about celebrating people and nature and we all have a part to play in our Biosphere. The ‘Blue Biosphere’, also known as the marine and coastal environments of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve extends 5km offshore and is home to an array of diverse marine life. The Sunshine Coast Marine BioBlitz was a great opportunity to celebrate our coastal and marine environments and role as citizen scientists within our Biosphere community. While thinking globally and acting locally, we can celebrate and share our learnings as part of a world network of biosphere reserves.

4:30pm – 6:30pm - Tallo-billa
This boat-based field trip is an original immersive experience of “Tallo-Billa” performed near Old Woman Island with a live stream of migrating humpback-whales. Tallo-Billa, meaning ‘Humpback Whale’ in Kabi Kabi language, is the focus of the latest iteration of the Beeyali project. Beeyali, a Kabi Kabi term meaning “to call,” explores the sounds and vocalisations of wildlife in the environment. Conceived by Kabi Kabi artist Lyndon Davis, the project has been developed in collaboration with sound artist Dr Leah Barclay and photographer Dr Tricia King at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The Beeyali project aims to continue connecting people and places, cultivating human and non-human relationships that help us comprehend and care for one another, our changing ecosystems, and shape our collective futures.
