Unveiled to the community on December 10, 2022, the new Sunshine Coast City Hall forms part of the collective vision to create a modern regional civic, business and commercial heart that is welcoming and accessible to our community.

Council's customer contact and development information counters are located on the ground floor, welcoming residents and assisting with any council-related enquiries.

City hall is a contemporary workspace - on level 1, governance is easily visible to our community. Our council chamber is accessible from the ground floor and clearly visible from outside of the building.

City hall's top floor, when its fit-out is complete mid next year, will be for the people. It will be used for a wide range of council-hosted and sponsored events, citizenship ceremonies and community engagement workshops. It will be available for hire for specified community and business events.

Behind the design process

The city hall building concept design is the result of multiple consultative efforts, including a visioning workshop with key stakeholders to establish and guide the design elements of the building.

Designed by Cottee Parker Architects with sustainability at its core design response, the new building includes features that will reduce environmental impact and embrace the Sunshine Coast climate.

The building is intended to fit seamlessly into its built and natural environment and distinguishes itself as a landmark building in the new city centre.

The building is inspired by the forms and colours of the unique Sunshine Coast Glass House Mountains. The mountain and water themes flow from the exterior inwards to deliver a holistic and integrated experiential journey for residents, visitors and staff.

The design provides a clear view of council chambers located on level 1, providing transparency to the community of governance in action.

A sustainable building

The city hall building is designed to achieve the following accreditation targets:

5 star green star - design accreditation has already been achieved. This accreditation encourages industry to create buildings that are not just green but healthy, liveable, productive, resilient and sustainable. Obtaining the as built accreditation the sustainability outcomes from the design and construction of the new city hall building are monitored through initial occupancy and is expected to be granted by mid-2023
5 star national Australian built environment rating system (NABERS) target – to obtain the 5 star rating, the building efficiency will be evaluated across four elements; energy, water, waste and indoor environment
