Fire ants
Fire ants were recently found on the Sunshine Coast. They were found at Nirimba (Bells Creek) on 27 May 2024 and Currimundi on 12 July 2024. The National Fire Ant Eradication Program are managing the response.
The National Fire ant Eradication Program have established an emergency response to assess the extent of the fire ant infestation and develop a treatment plan.
Eradication activities, including intensive treatment and surveillance will occur up to 5 km out from the detection site to protect the area and ensure no undetected fire ants remain.
The National Fire ant Eradication Program have treated these fire ant nests, but they need your help to make sure they've got every last one.
What can you do?
Report suspected ants and nests to the National Fire ant Eradication Program within 24 hours by phoning 13 25 23 or via the online form Report fire ants.
Restrict the movement of organic material, such as soil, hay, quarry and landscaping products on or off your property.
If you know someone living in the area, let them know.
